COMMUNITY: Fall 2010 Chinese Language and Culture Classes

Chinese I Learn conversational Mandarin, Chinese characters, and standard pinyin. Tuesdays 7:00 – 8:30 pm (9/7 - 11/23) Wednesdays 7:00 – 8:30 pm (9/8 - 12/1) Saturdays 10:15 – 11:45 am (9/11 - 12/4) Chinese II Building on the foundation laid in Chinese I, this course includes new practical, conversational structures and new characters. Tuesdays 7:00 – 8:30 pm (9/7 - 11/23) Chinese III A continuation of Chinese II, with more complex sentence structures and situations in Chinese. Mondays 7:00 – 8:30 pm (9/13 - 11/29) Chinese Advanced (IV) A continuation of Chinese III. The advanced class demands a higher skill level from students who have a vocabulary of at least 500 words. Mondays 7:00 – 8:30 pm (9/13 - 11/29) Course fee: $250, includes instructional materials. Enroll and pay by mail by the first day of class and save $50! All courses have one session per week, for 12 weeks. Classes will not meet during Thanksgiving break from 11/24 to 11/28. The above times are for classes held at the KU Edwards Campus, Overland Park, KS; schedules will be set soon for classes held in Lawrence. More information will be posted on the website as it is available. Parent & Child Chinese An introduction to Chinese language and culture for parents and young children (ages 4-8). Learn standard Mandarin Chinese phrases, songs, poems and games. Children must enroll and attend with an adult. Saturdays 9:00 – 10:00 am, 10 weeks (9/18 - 11/20) Course fee: $130 for one parent and one child (total); $50 for additional child(ren) or parent. CLASS: Trade Talk: Preparing for U.S. Customs Entry Process (REGISTER NOW)

Importing merchandise into the U.S. is a multi-step process that is highly regulated. This Trade Talk will identify the sequence of events and information required for: (1) getting a shipment released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, (2) the process of classification and appraisement that follows the release of the goods, and (3) what happens when CBP determines the entry documentation cannot be liquidated (finalized) until further requirements are met. Kerry Layton, Regulatory Compliance Consultant with FH Kaysing will be instructing this seminar.

Already taken Beginners Business Spanish? Not quite ready for intermediate level language courses? Our instructor, Tom Grimwood, is back to teach Part 2 or Advanced Beginners Business Spanish Course. The Kansas World Trade Center will host the course every Tuesday & Thursday from September 28, 2010 through November 18, 2010. The class will be limited to ten students in order to achieve the maximum education benefit, so sign up as soon as possible! The instructor of this course, Mr. Tom Grimwood, learned Spanish as a second language and experienced the culture first hand while living and working on assignment in Spanish speaking countries for 20 years.
