KWTC Makes a Big Impact

In September 2009, the Senate Finance Committee announced they would be working to pass a Miscellaneous Tariff Bill (MTB) similar to that passed in December of 2006.

The MTB provides the opportunity to request temporary elimination or reduction of tariffs on certain U.S. imports for up to two years. The purpose of the bill is to help U.S. manufacturers remain competitive as such tariff suspensions and reductions reduce costs.

Companies who participate are able to receive up to $500,000 in tariff relief for each product they submit providing that products meet set requirements.

Through relationships with our elected officials, the Kansas World Trade Center was able to get the message out about this opportunity as soon as it was available. We assisted Kansas companies through the entire process to verify the office of our elected officials received their requests and that the drafted bills were correct so that if passed, they would receive savings on their imports.

The KWTC assisted in the requests for the drafting of bills for six different products. Each product was eligible for up to $500,000 tariff relief per year, totaling a potential tariff savings of up to $6 million.
